Dylan hummed and made sure Emma stepped carefully while they looked at Katâs flowers. Her backyard was on the smaller side but beautiful and well maintained.
What she hadnât expected was for Kat to be so nervous. It was cute. She also hadnât expected Kat to give Emma a rose. No one had ever done that for Emma before. Kat was so genuine it blew her away.
âMom.â
âWhat, sweetie?â Dylan pushed the hair out of Emmaâs eyes.
âKatâs your friend now.â
âShe is.â
Emma nodded. âCan she be mine?â
âI donât see why not. Youâll have to ask her, but Iâm sure she wonât mind.â That was a good thing. Hopefully. It was both a blessing and a curse. Now, she would have to make sure that her baby didnât end up hurt if something went sideways.
âOkay, I will. Sheâs nice.â
âShe is.â
âAnd pretty.â Emma looked up at her.
âShe is.â
âGood.â
Emma must have gotten what she wanted because she was quiet as they headed back to the deck after walking the fence line. Dylan loved watching Emma be sure in her steps. She really was a pro with the prosthetic now. She would never let her fall, but always held out until she knew Emma needed the help.
âLet me help you, little lady.â Kat walked over to them and waited until Emma gave the okay, then helped her up the last step.
Dylan was surprised but she shouldnât have been. Kat seemed to always know what to say and do. As she stepped onto the deck, on impulse, Dylan kissed Kat on the cheek. Not waiting for her reply, she joined Emma at the table.
âOkay,â was all Kat said with a pleased look before she set two pitchers on the table. âWater and lemonade. If you want something else, let me know.â
âThis is perfect,â Dylan said.
Emma nodded. âI want some lemonade.â
Dylan poured them both a glass, then watched Kat at the grill. She looked like she belonged. âHow long have you been grilling?â
âSince I was young. I would always help my dad when weâd grill. He taught me everything he knew then I read up. Itâs fun. Briley canât grill to save her life and I canât bake. So, it all worked out. Especially since we live across the street from each other.â
âI didnât know that.â
âYep. Her house used to be directly across from mine until she moved in with Leah, who lives beside Brileyâs old house. Itâs on the market and we hope someone nice moves in.â
âHow did you come about this house?â She decided to keep today calm and informative.
âThe man that used to live here had a stroke and he moved in with his son. Brileyâs friend helped me get it at a good price. Iâve been working on renovating it since I moved in. I love it.â
âItâs a beautiful house.â
âItâs nice,â Emma added. âMom said you like Legos.â
âYes.â Kat turned the corn then focused on Emma. âI love putting them together. Your mom tells me you like the Elf ones.â
Emma nodded. âYup. I have the completed ones on a shelf, and I put the Lego figures in my dollhouses.
